Funds sought to create Wiluna Aboriginal camp

The Shire of Wiluna has asked the Western Australian Government for support to establish an Aboriginal camp in the town, in the state's mid-west.

Shire president Kerrie Johnston says the council hopes to set up a site on the outskirts of Wiluna because large numbers of people often come to the town for funerals and other gatherings.

Ms Johnston says a final design and costing for the project has not been decided on, but it would include toilet and washing facilities and possibly also a kitchen.

She says they are hopeful of State Government support for the project because the whole community would benefit.

"The issue is that the houses are overcrowded and people are camping in the bush, so we just felt that if we had one park area or camp area it would be much better," she said.

The Member for Murchison-Eyre, John Bowler, says the camp could potentially discourage antisocial behaviour when large groups congregate in the town, and hopes the camp can be established next year.
