Alas Folkloric - Jim Moginie This is the debut solo album from the Midnight Oil guitarist/keyboard play and major songwriter.
Since the Oils split he has been writing songs, producing and playing with other artists like Neil Finn, Sarah Blasko, Don Walker and Kasey Chambers. This album has come together over the past few years and even includes songs which were written for Midnight Oil but didn't make it onto CD.
As the title suggests, in it's Shakespearean way, there's more folk here than you might expect but there's abundant evidence of Moginie's skill as a songwriter.
Hopefully, this will be the first in a series of albums from this great songwriter. Official site Stream audio and video at musichead.com

New Music
:: Highway Companion - Tom Petty Tom leaves The Heartbreakers behind for a more introspective album produced by Jeff Lynne (ELO). It's apparently designed for listening on long car trips - there a number of car and road reference points - but overall, it's a rootsy side of Tom Petty. :: Practice What You Preach - The Poets Of Rhythm From 1993 - which doesn't quite count as "new" - comes this re-creation of 60s/70s soul. It has just been released by Daptone Records who brought us Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings so it looks and sounds totally authentic. Poets of Rhythm on Solesides.com Get a taste with these brief snippets: 'More Mess On My Things' (765kb, mp3) 'Funky Runthrough Part 1 & 2' (843kb, mp3)
:: The Howling Bells - The Howling Bells Australian four piece formed from the ashes of the band Waikiki who relocated to Britain. This debut album was produced by Coldplay's producer. They have a touch of folk and a touch of darkness. Official Site Streaming media: Audio - 'The Bell Hit', wma Video - 'Blessed Night', wmv
:: Undiscovered - James Morrison The latest of the young up-and-coming British soul singers - not the Australian trumpet player! Good voice and pretty good songs. Official Site Stream the video of 'You Give Me Something', wmv
:: At War With The Mystics - Flaming Lips American band who are still able to mix psychedelic and weirdness with strong pop-rock melodies. There's a significant Pink Floyd influence at work here and they are one of the most interesting American bands who can make political statements with humour.
